About

History: In 1940, a group of eight women began the Sylmar Woman’s Club as a sewing circle with a goal to meet and become acquainted with their neighbors, to know the community better and to foster a spirit of friendliness, neighborliness and helpfulness. Each one of the women present at that first meeting pledged to bring at least one new member to the next meeting and the membership was tripled the first year.  The club has grown to our present-day Sylmar Woman’s Club with 43 members. The symbol then, as now, was a true circle, no breaks, no points and no corners.

While sewing is no longer our focus, the other goals remain, especially to help our community. Our first scholarship was for $50. In May of 1984 the Sylmar Woman’s Club became a non-profit organization 501(c3). We currently give scholarships in the amounts of $500 and $1000 to 8-12 students per year.
